Introducing New RRTPO Leadership Roles

Richmond Regional Transportation Planning Organization Elects New Chair and Vice Chair

Chesterfield’s Winslow and Hanover’s Peterson to Fill 2024 Leadership Roles

Richmond, VA. (Aug. 29, 2023)The Richmond Regional Transportation Planning Organization, a cross-jurisdictional alliance of nine Richmond-area governments charged with coordinating and prioritizing transportation planning initiatives for the region, has elected its 2024 fiscal year board leaders. Chesterfield Supervisor Christopher M. Winslow and Hanover Supervisor W. Canova Peterson have been elected as the organization’s chair and vice chair for the year.

“I am pleased to assume this leadership post at a time when the region is moving ahead aggressively and prudently on so many transportation fronts,” Winslow said.  “At the same time that we are guided by the multi-modal transportation elements of ConnectRVA 2045, we are also addressing the region’s needs when it comes to pedestrian safety, a vibrant biking infrastructure and our ever-expanding public transportation needs as commuting patterns are shifting dramatically and development is booming across the region.  I look forward to working with Vice Chair Peterson, the board and the wider community in moving these and other issues forward.”

A member of the Chesterfield County board of supervisors since 2016 and chair of the board in 2022, Winslow also serves on the Capital Region Airport Commission, alternate to the Central Virginia Transportation Authority and on the board of directors of Greater Richmond Partnership and PlanRVA.  Winslow served as Chair of PlanRVA in fiscal year 2022, leading the Commission through an 18-month deliberation on new office space; ultimately resulting in the agency’s relocation to the Manchester neighborhood of Richmond.  “Regional leadership has never been stronger and we’re lucky to have two seasoned leaders at the helm this year”, said Martha Shickle, Executive Director for PlanRVA.

“Organizations like the Richmond Regional Transportation Planning Organization reflect the spirit of cooperation and collaboration that exists among local jurisdictions, and it is through these alliances that our best work emerges,” Peterson said. “There is a lot on our plate, and I welcome this opportunity to work with my colleagues throughout the region in addressing these important issues.”

Peterson was first elected to the Hanover board of supervisors in 2011 and currently serves as chair, in addition to board leadership positions in 2013 and 2019. An architect by profession, he serves on the Facility Space Needs, Finance and Legislative board committees and also represents Hanover on the PlanRVA commission and Central Virginia Transportation Authority.
